ABOUT THE EXHIBITION „90 YEARS WITH THE STATE PRINTING WORKS OF SECURITIES”

Besides the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the independent Czechoslovak State and the establishment of the country’s own national currency, other milestones in history include the founding of the national printing press for banknotes and securities, of which this year we will mark the 90th anniversary. In connection with this major anniversary, the State Printing Works of Securities is preparing a unique exhibit called 90 years with the State Printing Works of Securities”. The public is being offered a unique opportunity to learn about the history, development and production of Czech currency, stocks, bonds, personal documents and other securities.

The exhibition features a timeline of history up to the present, which reflects the historic, political and cultural development of the Czech Republic. Visitors will have the opportunity to become familiar with interesting items from the First Republic, such as the country’s first original banknotes featuring art from important creative artists of that era (Švabinský, Mucha, Mudruňka and many others). Of course there will also be a banknote from the most famous period in the company’s history (the CZK 1,000 banknote with a portrait of Palacký, based on the work of Švabinský), which has even been awarded at an international exhibition in Paris. Something noteworthy is the comparison of the original engraving drawings on the 1,000-crown note based on Švabinský’s design, from our best engravers from that era, Karel Wolf and Bohumil Heinz.

The exhibition does not leave out the war periods either (the currency from the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia during the Nazi occupation, the only postage stamp printed in our printing house, monetary vouchers for the concentration camp in Terezín and banknotes for the Slovak state, designed by Aurel Kajlich). They are followed by items from the 1950s and 1960s totalitarian periods and items from pre and post-revolution periods to the present (from authors Svolinský, Medvecká, Hruška, Lukavský, Brunovský and Kulhánek). Visitors can become familiar with the process that led to the creation of the current banknotes from pure paper, the phases of proposal, engraving and details of production. The unique exhibition items are original designs and engravings of banknotes, including those already introduced into circulation and those which have always been hidden in the safes of the State Printing Works of Securities. A remarkable rare item is the functioning guilloche machine, which is among many interesting items lent to the exhibit by the Czech National Bank.

Besides banknotes, The Strahov Monastery presents other products of the State Printing Works of Securities in the winter refectory (with a total area of 160 m2 with nearly 40 exhibit panels), which have accompanied us all throughout our lives. These include stocks, bonds and other securities and personal documents, on which there is a distinct spread in the design, technological approaches, processing trends, a combination of security features and personalisation.

In the interactive part of the exhibition, the public can become familiar for the first time with the demo version of new national identity cards with chips, which will be issued as of 1 July 2018 by the Ministry of Interior. Visitors can look inside plastic cards and will be able to try out and verify the functionality of the implemented chip.

We are confident that both the professional and general public will find parts of the exhibit to mark the 90 years with the State Printing Works of Securities” that will impress them from either a personal or professional point of view and that the public will take advantage of the once in a lifetime opportunity to tour the history of the development and production of Czech currency, stocks, bonds, personal documents and other securities.
